The Friendship Link is a total blast of normality for those with intellectual disability living in the community. We provide opportunities for our clients to meet each other in a safe space and have fun and form friendships within their comfort zone and intellectual ability. Every person is important and very special to us. We celebrate individuality and respect each client with a sense of joy for just who they are. We run 22 groups per month offering opportunities for each person to participate in such things as cooking classes, gentle exercise; sewing classes, pampering group and friendship groups that either meet here at Delta or go out to actively participate in the community. Monthly we host a disco here at Delta, go clubbing out on the town, have a movies and fish and chips night, and run a restaurant where clients make a booking for the evening meal. One Sunday a month we go fishing and have a city walking group. We also have a small but wonderful link called “Pet Friends”. One on one client/volunteer befriending with the family dog.

STAR SPOT : THE DELTA DISCO

Held on the last Thursday of every month the disco absolutely rocks! It is attended by around 100 clients and is for many the social highlight on their monthly calendars. They know it is “their disco” and they own it with enthusiasm and pride. A wonderful team of volunteers help in the kitchen and with a large number of people attending we have a security guard for safety. Our disco is world famous in Christchurch!!* Our activities and groups are all specifically targeted to meet client needs while encompassing a wide range of abilities and acknowledging everyone needs friendship and social interaction to enrich

self worth. To keep the Friendship Link affordable to everyone activities cost between $3.00 and $5.00. The Friendship Link is helped by volunteers that regularly turn up to give time to make our activities happen. We are very grateful for their input and acknowledge we could not run our big groups without their help and expertise. And our thanks must of course go to the MOH for their ongoing funding and to the Templeton Welfare Council for their continued support. Quote from Leoni “ I love coming to see you because you talk to me and I know you like me”
